Shed for an ATV: Floor Depth Decides, Not Door Width

A shed for an ATV is limited by floor depth, not door width. Utility machines run 81 to 85 inches in overall length and 46 to 48 inches wide.

A shed for an ATV is decided by floor depth, not door width. Utility ATVs run about 81 to 85 inches long and 46 to 48 inches wide, so a 7-foot machine leaves barely a foot of standing room inside an 8-foot-deep shed. Measure your own machine, then measure the depth you can actually use.

Most advice starts with the door. The door is rarely the problem: a 48-inch machine clears a 60-inch opening with room on both sides. What runs out is the floor behind it.

What a utility ATV actually measures

Published dimensions, checked October 17, 2026:

Manufacturers publish these as overall length and overall width — the figures already include the bodywork, not just the wheelbase.

| Model | Overall length | Overall width | Height | | ------------------------------------------------------- | -------------- | ------------- | ------- | | Honda FourTrax Rancher 4×4 (2026) | 82.8 in | 47.4 in | 46.2 in | | Honda FourTrax Rancher 4×4 Automatic DCT IRS EPS (2026) | 84.5 in | 47.4 in | 47.2 in | | Polaris Sportsman 570 (2025) | 83 in | 48 in | 47 in |

Polaris publishes 47 inches of height on the 2025 model page and 48 inches in the owner's manual for the same machine. Use the spec for your exact model year and trim rather than a class average, and prefer the figure in the manual that came with your machine.

Two things follow from the table. Length is the constraint — roughly 7 feet before you add anything. And the spread is narrow: across brands, utility ATVs land within a few inches of each other, so the planning numbers are stable even though your model is not in the table.

The three checks, in the order they fail

  1. Clear door opening against machine width. A 48-inch machine through a 60-inch opening leaves 12 inches total, or 6 inches a side. That is enough to drive through and not enough to be careless.
  2. Usable interior depth against machine length. A 7-foot machine in an 8-foot-deep shed leaves about 12 inches. You cannot stand behind it, and you cannot open a rear box. Work from the usable interior the maker documents, not the nominal label.
  3. Room to get off and walk around. This is the one people skip. Parking the machine is not the same as parking it and then reaching the wall behind it.

Check number two is why ATVs push the footprint up. An 8 × 10 shed parked the long way gives 10 feet of depth and about 3 feet behind the machine, while the 8-foot width leaves 48 inches around a 48-inch machine — about 2 feet on each side. A 10 × 12 gives real working room. Which of those you need depends on whether the shed is only a garage for the machine or also holds everything else.

Measure the machine in the position it will be stored

Published dimensions are for a stock machine. Measure your own at its widest and longest points in the configuration you will actually park:

  • Width at the handlebars or mirrors, whichever is wider — not at the tires.
  • Length including any front brush guard, winch, or rear box.
  • Height at the highest fixed point, with a windshield if one is fitted.

Accessories are what break a plan built on a brochure. A rear cargo box can add a foot of length that no spec sheet shows. Your own measured dimensions beat the published ones every time.

The clear opening is not the door size

A shed listed with a 60-inch double door does not necessarily give you 60 inches of clear space. Frames, hinges, and the center post on some double doors reduce it.

Ask the manufacturer for the documented clear opening before you trust the label — shed door width and clear opening size explains what to ask for and why the two numbers differ.

Questions people ask at this step

Will an ATV fit in a 10 × 12 shed?

On the numbers, yes, with room to work: a roughly 83-inch machine along the 12-foot dimension leaves about 5 feet behind it, and 10 feet of width around a 48-inch machine leaves 72 inches — roughly 3 feet on each side. That is the floor only. Whether it fits your shed depends on the documented interior rather than the nominal label, and on what else is already in there.

What size shed do I need for a side-by-side instead?

A side-by-side or UTV is substantially larger than the ATVs in the table above, in both length and width, and the numbers on this page do not transfer. Get the published dimensions for the specific machine and run the same three checks. A footprint that suits an ATV will usually be too small.

Does a ramp change the shed size?

It changes the space you need outside the door, not the interior. A ramp needs run-up room on the approach, and that room has to exist in the yard beyond the shed wall. This page does not cover ramp slope, load rating, or construction — those are the ramp manufacturer's specifications.

Carry the measurements forward

An ATV usually shares the shed with everything else, which makes the whole-inventory question the real one. Choose a practical shed size works from everything that has to fit, and will a shed fit in my yard checks the resulting footprint against the space you measured outside.
