Shed door width matters only if the thing you need to store can pass through the actual clear opening. The nominal door size and the usable opening are not automatically the same number. You need both the clear width and clear height, because an item that clears the sides can still catch the frame, header, or threshold.
The practical check is simple: measure the item at its widest and tallest points in the configuration you will move it, then compare those measurements with the shed manufacturer's documented clear opening. Do not choose a shed from a 36-inch or 48-inch label alone.
Nominal size and clear opening are different numbers
A door description can refer to the door unit, one leaf, a rough framed opening, or a product category. The clear opening is the unobstructed space left for the item to pass through when the door is in its usable open position.
Before comparing dimensions, ask what the published number describes:
- one door leaf or the full opening;
- the door panel, frame, or rough opening;
- the clear opening after assembly;
- width only or width and height;
- the opening with all leaves, latches, or sliding panels in their operating position.
If the specification does not explicitly identify the usable opening, treat it as unknown. Confirm with the manufacturer rather than subtracting a guessed allowance.
What reduces usable width and height
The assembled frame defines the edges of the opening. Stops, jambs, hinges, latches, handles, astragals where double doors meet, sliding tracks, and other hardware can project into that space. At the bottom, a sill or threshold can affect how an item rolls through. At the top, the header, track, or door hardware can control usable height.
That is why width and height need separate checks. Do not infer clear height from clear width, or assume that the tallest interior point is also the doorway height.
Door configuration changes the opening
A single hinged door, double hinged doors, and a sliding door do not create the same access pattern. With double doors, verify whether both leaves open, how they are secured, and whether the center hardware clears the path. With a hinged door, check whether a wall, shelf, or nearby obstacle prevents it from reaching the position used for the published opening. With a sliding system, check where the panel and track sit when open.

Those figures describe two specific products. They do not establish a standard opening for a 7 × 7, 10 × 7, double-door, or sliding-door shed.
Measure the item in the position that must pass through
Measure the item itself instead of relying on its category or product name:
- Put removable or folding parts in the position the manufacturer allows for moving and storage.
- Measure the widest point, including handles, guards, chutes, pedals, axles, or attachments that remain in place.
- Measure the tallest point in that same configuration.
- Note whether the item rolls straight, must be steered, tilts safely, or needs two people to control it.
- Repeat the measurement if an attachment or storage configuration changes.
For a box or cabinet, the diagonal can matter if you plan to rotate it through the doorway. For wheeled equipment, the approach and steering path may matter more than the parked footprint. Do not assume tilting is acceptable for an item unless its manufacturer instructions and safe handling allow it.

Work out the remaining margin
Use the same units for all four measurements:
- Width margin: clear opening width − item width
- Height margin: clear opening height − item height
If either result is zero or negative, the item does not clear that dimension. A positive result only says the opening is larger on paper. It does not guarantee that you can hold the item perfectly centered, cross the threshold, avoid the hardware, or make the approach.
There is no universal extra-inch allowance that works for every item. A rigid box carried by two people, a cart with protruding handles, and equipment that must be steered all use the remaining space differently. Choose a margin based on the item's shape and movement, then mock up the proposed opening with tape, boards, or two movable markers and practice the approach.
Passing the door is not the same as parking inside
An item can clear the doorway and still leave the shed unusable. After the opening check, compare its stored width, length, and height with the shed's usable interior dimensions. Include the turn from the doorway, room to get around the item, door swing inside the shed, shelves, and anything else that projects into the route.

Find and verify the manufacturer's opening
Check the exact model number, not a similar photo or nominal shed size. Look in this order:
- the manufacturer's product specifications;
- a dimension drawing or current assembly manual;
- an official retailer specification supplied by the manufacturer;
- written confirmation from the manufacturer or seller.
Record the source, model number, clear width, clear height, door configuration, and date checked. If a retailer and manufacturer disagree, keep the conflict open until the manufacturer confirms which specification applies to the model being sold.
